H2 Atlantic “Beachy Head” – Testing Run at Sharpthorne Tunnel with Metropolitan Coaches, Bluebell Railway (Digital Download)
Celebrate a remarkable milestone in steam preservation with this stunning high-resolution digital download of the newly completed H2 Atlantic “Beachy Head”, captured during testing in 2024 before officially entering passenger service on the Bluebell Railway.
This beautiful image shows “Beachy Head” gliding past Sharpthorne Tunnel on a bright summer morning, hauling two elegant Metropolitan Railway coaches and the eye-catching LNWR Observation Carriage — a formation that perfectly recreates the Edwardian spirit of luxury express travel. The sun-dappled countryside, gleaming locomotive, and vintage carriages combine to make this an unmissable scene for any railway enthusiast or collector of historic steam moments.
Locomotive History
The original LB&SCR H2 Atlantic Class was designed by D.E. Marsh in the early 20th century to haul fast express trains on the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, particularly the prestigious Brighton Limited. These graceful 4-4-2 locomotives were admired for their smooth running and elegant lines but were all sadly scrapped by the 1950s.
In an incredible feat of dedication, the Bluebell Railway’s Atlantic Project has painstakingly recreated one of these lost engines — building “Beachy Head” from original components and newly engineered parts to exacting historical standards. After decades of hard work, this stunning new-build steam locomotive finally began test runs in 2024, fulfilling a dream to see a Brighton Atlantic in steam once more.
