Locomotive History
The original H2 Atlantic Class was designed by D.E. Marsh and built for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway in the early 20th century. Known for their graceful 4-4-2 wheel arrangement and smooth-running performance, the H2 Atlantics hauled premier express trains along the South Coast, serving routes between London and seaside resorts like Brighton and Eastbourne.
The last of the original class was sadly scrapped in 1958, but the Bluebell Railway Atlantic Group took on the ambitious project of recreating one of these lost locomotives. Rebuilt using genuine components and newly fabricated parts, No. 32424 “Beachy Head” now brings the spirit of Edwardian express steam back to life, hauling beautifully restored vintage trains through the Sussex countryside for today’s generations to admire.
