Locomotive History

Built in 1893 at Nine Elms Works for the London & South Western Railway, T3 No. 563 was designed by the celebrated engineer William Adams for express passenger work across the LSWR network. A rare survivor of its class, 563 is the only remaining Adams T3 and one of the oldest operational steam locomotives in the UK today.

Withdrawn in 1945, No. 563 spent decades on static display before being restored to steam by the Swanage Railway Trust — a remarkable feat that returned this unique Victorian engine to Britain’s heritage main line for new generations to enjoy. Today, 563 continues to turn heads on the Swanage Railway, delighting visitors with its classic Victorian design and evocative charm.
