Locomotive Histories

U Class 31806:
Built in 1926 at Ashford Works for the Southern Railway, the U Class Moguls were designed by Richard Maunsell for mixed-traffic duties across the Southern Region. Withdrawn in 1964, 31806 was rescued from Barry Scrapyard and restored to full working order. Today, it is a star performer at the Swanage Railway, often seen hauling both passenger and heritage freight services.

Bulleid Light Pacific 34072 “257 Squadron”:
Designed by Oliver Bulleid, the Battle of Britain Class Light Pacifics were introduced during WWII to haul express services on the Southern Railway. 34072 “257 Squadron” was built in 1948 and named to honour the famous RAF squadron that fought in the Battle of Britain. After withdrawal in the 1960s, it too was saved from Barry Scrapyard and painstakingly restored to mainline condition. It now regularly thrills visitors on the Swanage Railway with its distinctive air-smoothed casing and evocative wartime name.
