Locomotive History

Built in 1872 for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway at Brighton Works, “Fenchurch” is one of the world’s oldest working steam locomotives. Part of the celebrated A1/A1X Terrier Class designed by William Stroudley, these small but mighty tank engines became legendary for their reliability and versatility, working suburban passenger trains and light goods services across the South of England.

After an incredible career spanning mainline and branch line duties, “Fenchurch” was withdrawn in 1963 and became one of the first locomotives preserved by the Bluebell Railway — Britain’s first standard-gauge preserved steam railway. Today, “Fenchurch” remains a treasured flagship of the line, delighting visitors as she hauls both vintage passenger and demonstration goods trains through the beautiful Sussex countryside.
