Experience the raw power of classic Southern steam with this striking high-resolution digital download of LB&SCR Atlantic Class No. 32424 “Beachy Head,” captured in spectacular style as it storms away from Horsted Keynes station on the Bluebell Railway.

This dramatic image shows “Beachy Head” enveloped in a billowing cloud of steam and smoke, its exhaust catching the light as it powers away from the historic country station. The scene perfectly evokes the glory days of express steam travel on the Southern network, making it an ideal piece for any railway enthusiast, Atlantic Class fan, or collector of classic British steam photography.

Locomotive History

The original H2 Atlantic Class was designed by D.E. Marsh and built for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway in the early 20th century. Known for their graceful 4-4-2 wheel arrangement and smooth-running performance, the H2 Atlantics hauled premier express trains along the South Coast, serving routes between London and seaside resorts like Brighton and Eastbourne.

The last of the original class was sadly scrapped in 1958, but the Bluebell Railway Atlantic Group took on the ambitious project of recreating one of these lost legends. Rebuilt using genuine components and newly fabricated parts, No. 32424 “Beachy Head” now brings the spirit of Edwardian express steam back to life, hauling beautifully restored vintage trains through the Sussex countryside for today’s generations to admire.
