Locomotive History
Originally built in 1954 at Brighton Works, BR Standard Class 4MT 80078 is part of a fleet designed for mixed traffic duties, particularly on branch lines. With its tank configuration and versatility, it was a frequent sight across the Southern Region until withdrawal in the 1960s.
Now preserved and operational at the Mid Norfolk Railway, 80078 is a popular visitor at galas and steam events. For the 2025 Cuckoo Line Gala, the locomotive was temporarily renumbered to 80144, as well as other 4MT Tank class mates and decorated to honour the historic route that closed in 1965.
