Streaking Past the Coast
from £9.00
The world famous A4 class steam locomotive are known primarily for "Mallard" and her run in 1938 that gave her the world speed record for a steam locomotive. However, her designer Sir Nigel Gresley had an A4 named after him. The locomotive "Sir Nigel Gresley" streaks (nickname given to A4s) past Dawlish as she gives a blast on her chime whistle for the camera.
Sir Nigel Gresley was the 100th Gresley Pacific locomotive that was built by London North Eastern Railway and was brought into service in 1937. The prestige of this locomotive knows no bounds as she hauled the Royal train in 1956. The locomotive would head to Scotland as her final British Railway shed before retiring in 1964. She would continue her life in the 1970s on the mainline after BR lifted the steam ban. Since the 1970s she has been seeing plying her trade on the mainline and at preserved railways up and down the country.
